Matthias Kaiser Ceramic Explosion Ashtray in Platinum
This series showcases beautifully the interaction between the artist and his material. The clay for this piece is procured from a digging site that had been abandoned since the Romans left it.The composition of the clay that Matthias procures by hand is central to the creation of these pieces. Many clays will not allow for such a thick piece to be fired and survive the process.
The sculptural ashtray came about partly by accident while Matthias was depositing the wire cuttings while creating the the shape of the anvil ashtray pieces.
Technically it has had the same treatment as the other ashtrays, three firings and the addition of a platinum overglaze to create the final finish and colour.
