Local Heroes: Best of Our Neighbourhood

Local Heroes: Best of Our Neighbourhood

As the world around us begins to open up once more, we are delighted to be able to spend more time supporting the locally owned businesses around us. As we move through what has been an incredibly tough time for independent retail, it has become more important than ever to support local.

In the spirit of shopping independent, we have compiled a small guide to some of our favourite local spots in Stockbridge - and some slightly farther afield. Supporting good businesses owned by good people.

Archipelago Edinburgh

Archipelago Artisan Bakery - 39 Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6QQ
Archipelago Provisions - 23c Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6QQ

Archipelago Artisan Bakery is our favourite neighbourhood bakery that boasts a wide range of salads and baked goods prepared fresh every day. Items are baked by hand using organic flour and locally sourced produce where possible. A lovely al fresco area out front makes it equally welcoming when the weather is brighter as it is cosy on dreich days.

Archipelago's sister store, Archipelago Provisions is a short walk up the hill on the same street and is full of the best quality versions of everything you already buy - and many more hard to find things you didn't know you needed.

The Howdah Tea & Coffee Company - 5 Deanhaugh Street, Edinburgh EH4 1LU

The Howdah Tea & Coffee Company is a lovely, family run business offering some of the highest quality teas and coffees in Edinburgh. The shop, located on the main street in Stockbridge, is a warm and welcoming space. Dine in and takeaways are always welcome, and whole or ground beans are available to purchase for home brewing. Special blends are also available upon request.

St Vincent Bar Edinburgh

St. Vincent
 - 11 St Vincent Street, Edinburgh EH3 6SW

Nestled in a basement of a Georgian Townhouse on the quiet corner of Circus Lane and St Vincent Street, St. Vincent is a warm and welcoming venue; a modern take on a traditional Scottish boozer.

Smith & Gertrude - 26 Hamilton Place, Edinburgh EH3 5AU

Smith & Gertrude is an independent cheese and wine bar just around the corner from us. With a focus on quality and simplicity, Smith & Gertrude focus on serving high quality, locally sourced produce.

Jorum Studio - 12 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh EH3 5AL

A new addition to the Stockbridge neighbourhood, Jorum Studio crafts unique, contemporary perfumes. All fragrances are crafted by hand in house, using the finest raw materials. Nurtured through all phases of development, fragrances are crafted in a considered manner, with attention paid to every detail.

Edinburgh Mercantile

Edinburgh Mercantile - 18 NW Circus Place, Edinburgh EH3 6SX

Just a few doors down from us on NW Circus Place, Edinburgh Mercantile's considered collection of utilitarian goods is in equal parts beautiful and useful. Working with trusted designers and makers, Edinburgh Mercantile is home to beautiful products with good, honest craftsmanship at the fore.

Catalog Interiors Edinburgh

Catalog Interiors - 116 Raeburn Place, Edinburgh EH4 1HG

Catalog Interiors is an independent, multi-brand design store located in the heart of Stockbridge. Expertly curated, Catalog's collection brings together pieces from many of the world's most beautiful designers.

Aetla Edinburgh Stockbridge

ætla - 46 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh EH3 5AL

Dedicated to showcasing pieces from lesser known local and international designers,
ætla is home to a beautifully curated selection of fine jewellery that speak to the owner's Faroese/Scandinavian aesthetic sensibilities.

Treen - 2-4 St Stephen Place, Edinburgh EH3 5AJ

A fellow retailer just around the corner from us with a similar slow fashion ethos. Treen's well curated selection of vegan friendly brands is underpinned by their dedication to supporting ethical production.

The Method - 9 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh EH3 5AN

A beautiful lifestyle store that is home to well crafted products designed to elevate everyday experiences. The Method's wide range of products includes their ever-evolving MODM brand, which is developed and produced locally.

Dahlia
- 22 Deanhaugh Street, Edinburgh EH4 1LY
Grow Urban - 8B St Vincent Street, Edinburgh EH3 6SH

Lovely local stores for all things botanical.

Raeburn Fine Wines Edinburgh

Raeburn Fine Wines - 23 Comely Bank Road, Edinburgh EH4 1DS

Our favourite place to buy wine in Edinburgh. A family owned importer, Raeburn Fine Wines has operated since the early 80s. A small, unassuming shop front boasts an exhaustive list of masterfully selected wines both newly discovered and previously aged. Whilst the floor to ceiling displays can at times feel overwhelming to many, assistance is gladly offered. Raeburn Fine Wines' ethos of selecting wines that are a pleasure to drink and share and exhibit the highest quality and value irrespective of price makes it difficult to go wrong here.

Ingleby Gallery - 33 Barony Street, Edinburgh EH3 6NX

Founded in 1998, Ingleby Gallery has since established itself as one of the country's leading private art galleries and maintains a dynamic and ambitious program of established and emerging artists. An unending source of creative inspiration to us, Ingleby Gallery holds a special place in our hearts. The building alone is well worth the visit, the gallery space nestled within a Category A listed former place of worship.

Arusha Gallery - 13A Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6QG

Established in 2013, Arusha Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town. Regularly collaborating with guest artists and curators, Arusha showcases vibrant exhibitions from local and international artists.

Antony Gormley - 6 TIMES. Multi-part sculptural installation (2010)

6 TIMES is a quiet and contemplative series of six sculptures by Turner Prize winning artist, Antony Gormley. Life-size casts of the Artist's own body, the cast iron figures are dotted along the Water of Leith. This particular figure can be viewed from the bridge over the Water of Leith, down along our street in Stockbridge.

Other Favourites (a little farther afield, but well worth mentioning)...

Casa Amiga - 294 Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH6 5BX

Essential. Whilst not strictly in our neighbourhood, we had to include Casa Amiga on our list of favourites. Crunchy, flaky pastry combined with a cinnamon spiced, torched custard, a Pastel de Nata from Casa Amiga truly is a thing of beauty. Prepared fresh daily.

Spry - 1 Haddington Place, Edinburgh EH7 4AE

Spry is a beautifully airy neighbourhood wine bar specialising in natural wines. Though a little farther afield from our location in Stockbridge (situated at the top of Leith Walk), we felt it also deserved a mention. On top of their beautifully curated wine list, Spry also serves a rotating menu of small plates with a focus on showcasing local produce.
