AW 25 lookbook with menswear photographer Jamie Ferguson
As a longtime fan of Edinburgh based shop Dick's, when they asked me to style out some of their AW25 garms for a shoot I didn't even need to think about it.
Trying on the latest items from your favourite brands? Uh yes please. Sign me up. What's the expression; 'like a kid in a candy store', but instead of eating candy till you explode, this 40yr old boy got to wrap himself in wool, corduroy, cotton and cashmere. In your face Wonka!
I think one of the best signs of a store knowing exactly what the hell they're doing is having such a diverse range of brands in house but ones that I was easily able to mix and match into coherent outfits.
Standouts included De Bonne Facture, Aton, Crescent Down Works, Finamore, Jamieson's of Shetland, Orslow, Manifaturra Ceccarelli and Cini Venezia to name just a few.
Big thank you to Uli, Andrew and the entire team for having me on as a part of this project.
De Bonne Facture Camargue Coat + Cini Cardigan
Main reason for selecting this Harris Tweed coat; please see above; De Bonne Facture strikes again! If you don’t own a tweed-y, raglan sleeve overcoat yet, this should be a consideration. Extremely subtle little houndstooth going on, mixing all the sorts of lovely Autumnal shades that work with everything.
I loved this little kimono-shirt/cardigan from Cini. Great layering piece and anything with pockets gets an A-plus from me.
Massimo Alba Mercury Herringbone Wool Overcoat
Look at this thing. What a work of art. It straddles a fine line between classic contemporary and progressive fashion and pulls it off with aplomb. I’ve worn almost exclusively raglan-sleeve style coats the last few years so was pleasantly surprised at how drawn I was to this set-in sleeve version from Massimo Alba. The oversized herringbone pattern on the pre-washed wool gives it a unique appearance that’s sure to draw the eye of many a passerby.
I wasn’t entirely familiar with ATON when Uli said they had received a few pieces for this AW season but boy howdy am I familiar now! The comfiest, breeziest RTW I’ve ever put on. Exactly what you would expect of minimal Japanese tailoring; clean and simple in the best possible wa
Speaking of fair isle… This colour way from Harley of Scotland felt professorial in nature so I immediately paired it with some wide wale brown cords and a tweedy overcoat. Class dismissed.
De Bonne Facture Sherpa Jacket + Drake's Japanese Selvedge Denim Jeans
Despite having two navy fleece options in store, I ended up going with this De Bonne Facture version over the Drake’s. One, I’m currently OBSESSED with DBF and everything they are doing. Two, this fleece just felt a little bit more streamlined. Full blues for the rest of the outfit, trying to vary the shades where possible just so it isn’t too matchy-matchy and a nifty little sweater-scarf to top it off.
OrSlow Coverall + Drake's Rugby Shirt
I call this the ‘Jason Jules’ special. If you know, you know. And if you don’t, you should immediately google Jason Jules and bid farewell to being poorly dressed ever again. I love denim chore coats and nobody does it better than OrSlow. I’ve had Orslow pieces myself for well over 10 years now and they’re still going strong. I sized up a little on this one as I wanted to have a little more of a ‘relaxed’ feel to the overall silhouette.
Some Drake’s pieces you just immediately know what to do with them. This rugby was begging to be Ivy-fied. Naturally. Tucked into some high rise chinos and some suede penny loafers. Piece of cake. The cobalt blue sweater by GRP might be veering into the ‘too much colour’ territory but despite my earlier warning I feel that Drake’s items let you get away with it. I mean it’s not THAT blue right?
Manifattura Ceccarelli Cruiser Jacket + Finamore Salina Shirt
This bright red, wool jacket from Manifattura Ceccarelli reminded me of one of those old Woolrich, hunting coats, in the best way. I think this is a great jacket to wear down the pub for a cheeky half or out running those last minute Christmas errands. Or both at the same time!
While Finamore are primarily known for their fantastic shirts, this boxy OVER-shirt caught my eye. Love that it’s been made up in a chunky cord rather than the more standard pin cord, giving it a bit more textural interest.
Valstar Vittoria Overcoat + GRP Folk Cardigan
Did I mention I love raglan sleeve overcoats? Haha! This one from Valstar is a classic, navy herringbone which can do no wrong. Great length too, hitting just at and a little below the knee making it extremely versatile and offering better protection against the cold wind when compared to something like say a peacoat.
This GRP cardigan was punchy. It felt almost like an Italian version of a fairisle cardigan but the minute I threw it on any reservation about how strongly patterned it was fell away. I think this would serve as an excellent ‘Christmas Jumper’ alternative for those more serious customers.
Crescent Down Works Shirt
Crescent Down Works have been doing wonderful things with down since 1974 and this shirt jacket is no exception. The colour lends itself to earthy tones with cool pops like the chinos and the navy scarf by Begg & Co. You could also throw a raglan sleeve coat overtop as well if the temperature ever drops below freezing but you may still be grand with just the Crescent Down. That thing is toasty!
Crescent Down Works Hooded Sweatshirt
Mustard on everything right? Even your clothes. I’ve long been an advocate for colour but it’s knowing how much to use and if you’re popping I believe the rule of thumb is always; ONE PIECE. Pair the rest of the outfit with some cosy, textured pieces like these rich, chunky cords and GRP Aran sweater and hot dawg.
