This series showcases beautifully the interaction between the artist and his material. The clay for this piece is procured from a digging site that had been abandoned since the Romans left it. The composition of the clay that Matthias procures by hand is central to the creation of these pieces. Many clays will not allow for such a thick piece to be fired and survive the process.
This piece has undergone three separate firings and application of a real gold glaze in order to achieve the superb finish.
