Matthias Kaiser is an Austrian ceramicist deeply committed to his craft, having studied at Parsons School of Design in New York before embarking on apprenticeships with two Japanese master potters. Rooted in materiality and experimentation, his nuanced, stylistically diverse work takes inspiration from traditional Eastern ceramic practices, exploring the delicate balance between intent and accident.
The three part construction of this vase and the eccentric position of the neck mean one can view it as almost sculptural, without any loss of function.
Matthias achieves the olive green colour of the body using a method of firing that causes the iron ore in the glaze to transform in its structure and colour. This process also produces the speckled affect across the vase created by concentrations of iron ore in the clay.
